Following Iraqi music enthusiast and artist Majid Shokor on a decade-long quest to discover more about the little-known roots of Iraq’s 20th century music history, ‘On the Banks of the Tigris: The Hidden Story of Iraqi Music’ is a documentary that explores a culture in exile – one bound by pride and a longing for its homeland. Interviews with Iraqi musicians living abroad, such as maqam singer Farida Mohammad Ali and oud players Yair Dalal and Ahmed Mukhtar, celebrate what Shokor describes as ‘a beautiful time in Iraq’s history.’This post is part of the biweekly Brownbook Music Series.
